Maths on the Move

The research behind Maths on the Move

Independent research into physically active learning.

Maths on the Move was independently evaluated by Leeds Beckett University to explore the impact of physically active learning on both physical activity levels and maths performance.

The research compared pupils taking part in physically active maths lessons with pupils learning through traditional classroom approaches.

Key findings from the evaluation.

The study found that pupils taking part in Maths on the Move:

Improved maths attainment compared to pupils in traditional lessons
Increased moderate to vigorous physical activity during the school day
Reduced time spent inactive
Reported higher enjoyment of maths lessons
Showed increased confidence in learning

The research also highlighted how physically active learning can help schools increase activity levels without reducing curriculum teaching time.

What this means for schools.

For schools, this supports a practical reality. Learning does not need to be sedentary to be effective.

When movement is integrated into lessons, pupils can stay active while continuing to develop subject knowledge and understanding. This helps schools:

Increase physical activity
Improve pupil engagement
Support maths outcomes
Build confidence
Support PE & Sport Premium impact

Maths on the Move provides a structured way to introduce this approach safely and effectively.
